The coming Kongernes Nordsjælland national park

Skidendam. Photographer Lars GeilKongernes Nordsjælland has been nominated as a future national park. Establishment of the national park is expected to start in autumn 2009.

The nominated area covers some of Denmark's richest deciduous woodlands, including natural forests and swamp forests as well as the largest lakes in Denmark; Esrum Sø and Arresø. Both lakes are surrounded by abundant and varied bird life.

The forest of Gribskov and Esrum Sø are situated centrally in the North Zealand landscape as a natural core area. Together, the lake and the forest encompass an area with natural qualities and activity potentials that make it unique in Denmark.

Historically, North Zealand has received special attention from Royalty, as witnessed by the palaces of Søborg, Gurre, Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Fredensborg, where the unique systems of pathways for hunting (riding to hounds) have been established.

The area already has a number of facilities for visitors. However, a national park will provide great opportunities for enhancing peoples' understanding of nature, outdoor activities and knowledge – for local people and the more than a million people living in the Greater Copenhagen area.
